The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes illustrated by Louis Slobodkin is a story about school children teasing a poor little Polish girl. They tease her for her strange name and that she wears the same dress every day. The little girl boasts that she has a hundred dresses at home. How can this be true? But she does have 100 dresses: drawn dresses of all different colours and patterns which the other children discover when she submits them for a design competition at school. Some the children seek to make friends and ask forgiveness. Not preachy at all, this book is a beautiful way to communicate how much words can hurt. I think a wonderful book to share with your daughter.
